Proportional Caliper device is used to evaluate the performance of materials or mixes by determining percentages of flat particles and elongated particles, as well as shape characteristics, in coarse aggregate fractions of 0.375in (9.5mm) or larger.
To determine the shape of flat particle sizing, set the width of a particle in the larger end of the caliper and tighten the pivot screw. Check the same particle in the smaller measuring end without adjusting the caliper. If the particle fits within the smaller gap, it is considered a flat particle. To determine the shape of elongated particles, follow the same steps. If the particle is longer than the small measurement in both situations, the particle is neither flat nor elongated.
The base plate and pivot arms of the Proportional Calipers are constructed of 7 gauge steel, and the upright posts are constructed of steel. Base plates, posts, and pivot arms are yellow zinc plated. Proportional Calipers feature opening ratios of 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, and 1:5, and are available in two models:
HM-38R Proportional Caliper features fixed posts and four threaded openings for repositioning the pivot screw to the required ratios. Dimensions are 16x6x3in (406x152x76mm), WxDxH.
HM-38B Four-Station Proportional Caliper features openings for all four ratios with no need to reposition the pivot screw. Dimensions are 16x8x3in (406x203x76mm), WxDxH.
